Special Exhibition of Ukrainian Motanka Dolls was on display during April 26 – June 2, 2024 in the Earth Plaza cultural center in Yokohama. Featured topic “A Tradition of Love and Protection”
This event highlights the 7000-year-old tradition of Motanka dolls, which have been passed down through generations in Ukraine as symbols of protection, love and resilience.
Curated by the Aitsugi Charity Project, the exhibition features nearly 50 handcrafted Motanka dolls made by Ukrainian artisans, as well as displays showcasing the crafting process in Ukraine. These dolls carry deep cultural significance, reflecting the country’s history, traditions, and the enduring spirit of its people.
There was also Special Motanka Doll Workshops, where visitors could make their own Motanka doll on May 19, 2024 in the Children’s International Understanding Exhibition Room. Participants learned about the history and significance of these unique dolls before creating their very own Motanka.
Visitors discovered the beauty of Ukrainian heritage through the artistry of Motanka dolls, experienced Ukraine’s rich cultural traditions and had the opportunity to support “Healing together through Art” initiative for Ukrainian children, suffered from the war in Ukraine.
